Knox Theological Seminary Announces New Partnership with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church

Knox Theological Seminary is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) to support and strengthen pastoral leadership across EPC congregations.

This partnership establishes a Certification for EPC Commissioned Pastoral Leadership, a trusted, flexible, affordable, and fully online theological training pathway developed collaboratively by EPC leadership and Knox faculty. The program is designed for Ruling Elders called to serve as Commissioned Pastors, equipping them with the biblical, theological, and practical foundations needed for faithful ministry within the EPC.

Meeting a Growing Need in the Church

Congregations across the EPC—particularly smaller and rural churches—are facing increasing challenges in securing pastoral leadership that fits their theological convictions, resources, and local context. Commissioned Pastors have long served as a faithful response to this need.

The EPC–Knox partnership provides a training pathway that is rooted in Reformed theology, aligned with EPC polity, and designed to be accessible and practical, allowing leaders to remain embedded in their local church and community while preparing for service.

A Clear Pathway for Churches and Candidates

The Certification for EPC Commissioned Pastoral Leadership preserves the authority of EPC Ministerial Committees, who remain the gatekeepers of the commissioning process. At the same time, it provides a defined and reliable training pathway for candidates under consideration.

The pathway includes assessment by the Ministerial Committee, completion of Knox’s Ministry Essentials Certification, and presbytery review prior to commissioning. The one-year, self-paced online program includes six courses and a supervised practicum covering core areas such as Reformed theology, preaching, biblical interpretation, church history, and EPC leadership.

Supporting Faithful Ministry

Commissioned Pastors who complete the certification are encouraged to pursue continuing education through Knox. Certification holders may also receive advanced standing toward Knox certificates or degree programs, including the MA or MDiv.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to academic integrity, denominational alignment, and practical preparation—providing both churches and candidates with a strong foundation for long-term ministry.

Serving the Church Together

Through this partnership, Knox and the EPC are working together to thoughtfully support congregations and leaders by providing theological education that is accessible, rigorous, and deeply connected to the life of the local church.
