Part Four in a five-week blog series on the Theological Exegesis track in the Doctor of Ministry program at Knox Theological Seminary.

Dr. Jonathan Linebaugh, Assistant Professor of New Testament, teaches one of the required courses in the newly-launched theological exegesis concentration of the Doctor of Ministry at Knox Theological Seminary.

Dr. Linebaugh’s teaching and writing ministry focuses largely on reading the epistles of the apostle Paul with the benefit of the witness of the Protestant Reformers. In his doctoral dissertation, published articles, and in forthcoming work, he tries to take Martin Luther seriously as a biblical interpreter before anything else and to listen attentively to Luther’s witness as a vibrant resource for reading the text of Scripture itself.

Dr. Linebaugh, along with Dr. Michael Allen, is currently editing a volume entitled Reformation Readings of Paul. This book will provide an introduction to the way the Protestant Reformers read some of the most influential Pauline texts, and it will then offer guidance in how to faithfully and critically appropriate their work in our own context. This kind of approach – renewing the church by retrieving her vital tradition of biblical exegesis – marks the way that the theological exegesis concentration seeks to shape men and women for contemporary biblical study.

One of the required classes in the concentration is called “Scripture and Doctrine,” and it is taught by Dr. Linebaugh. There he hopes to show students how doctrine is teased out from the Scriptures, yet it is also meant to lead back to and aid further reading of the Bible. Doctrine is not a surrogate for or supplement to the Bible; rather it is an aid and help in better engaging the Bible. By looking at various case studies, Dr. Linebaugh will help students grow in their facility to move from Bible to doctrine and back again.

You may find more resources about this exciting new program at Knox Theological Seminary here.

Knox Theological Seminary recently appointed Author, Church Planter and Pastor Tullian Tchividjian Lecturer of Pastoral Theology. Rev. Tchividjian’s passion to proclaim God’s two words—law and gospel—to a worn out world embodies the mission of Knox, which is “to equip servant leaders for ministry that is Christ centered, gospel driven, and mission focused.” What Pastor Tullian and Knox share is commitment to a message that is defined by Jesus’s own mission: “I came to set the captives free” (Luke 4: 18).

This appointment is one of many exciting things happening at Knox, including vibrant and growing residential master’s programs, a range of fully online master’s degrees, various Doctor of Ministry tracks in partnership with Logos Bible Software, and well over a million dollars in student scholarships.

Knox is making accessing and affording a seminary education easier than it’s ever been, and the addition of Tullian Tchividjian to an already outstanding faculty means that Knox is the place to go if you want to study the gospel afresh so that you can declare it anew to a broken and burned-out world.

Dr. Jono Linebaugh finished teaching a new DMin course entitled Romans: Exegesis and Theology that was offered July 23 through the 27th at Knox in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

The course was designed to be a study of Paul’s Letter to the Romans focused on its literary and canonical argument, engaging the history of interpretation, and considering its theological and pastoral implications. As we engage the text we will encounter a number of major issues in theology and ministry: the person and work of Christ, the meaning and content of God’s righteousness and grace, the definition of and distinction between law and gospel, the world as created and fallen, the relationship between faith, freedom, and obedience, and a Christological reading of the Old Testament.

By Dr. Jono Linebaugh

Deriving its name and purpose from Jesus’ own mission statement in Luke 4 – “I came to proclaim liberty to the captives” – the first annual LIBERATE conference was hosted by Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in late February 2012. LIBERATE is a resource ministry that “exists to declare the liberating power of the Gospel,” and to that end there will be a yearly conference as well as a website loaded with videos, sermons, blogs, essays, art, book reviews, and more.

What unites these various forms of media is a message: God’s law shows us our sin; God’s gospel announces that Jesus saves sinners. Attempting to say this “one thing,” the theme of the 2012 LIBERATE conference was “Grace Unmeasured.” Speakers like Mike Horton, David Zahl, Elyse Fitzpatrick, Paul Tripp, Tullian Tchividjian, Rod Rosenbladt, and Scotty Smith gathered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to join their voices in saying – in their unique ways, with their own stories, and from different portions of scripture – that “while our sin reaches far, God’s grace reaches farther.”

The decision to be dedicated to and defined by this “one thing” is informed by Paul’s determination to “know nothing except Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). As Martin Luther famously said, “I preach the gospel to my people and to myself every day because we forget it every day.” He didn’t mean that we are inclined to forget the facts of the gospel; he meant that we are disinclined to believe the truth of the gospel. In his words, “The promises of God are easier to talk about than they are to believe.” The speakers at LIBERATE recognized that “the word of the cross” is scandalous and foolish, but they believe and so proclaimed this weak and foolish word as the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:23-24).

Commonsense will always stumble over the cross. Everything in us tells us that who we are is based on what we do; that our identity is determined by our actions. But that is the “wisdom of this world” and the “foolishness of God” is wiser (1 Corinthians 1:25). In contrast to commonsense, the gospel declares the counterintuitive: our deepest and truest identity – who we are before God – is not based on what we do. Our identity is anchored in what Jesus has done for us. LIBERATE exists to continually announce this gospel so that it can do its missionary work of moving into the unevangelized territories of our hearts – invading the dark regions of unbelief with the light of the truth that “God shows his love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
